Magnetic Island - QLD

Magnetic Island Travel Information

Magnetic Island is one of the most accessible holiday destinations in Australia. Whether by plane, or rail, the island is within reach of most major cities. Transport within the island is also very easy, with a good bus system as well as regular taxi service.

By Plane

Townsville has direct flights from Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane. Companies serving the town include Quantas, Jetstar and Virgin. A shuttle links the airport and the ferry terminal, from where one can catch the ferry for Magnetic Island (costing AU$ 9). Bookings are required for this service as it operates as required. Taxis are also available to the ferry terminal (around AU$ 15).

By Car

Townsville is around 3 hours drive north from Airlie Beach and 4.5 hours south of Cairns. It is around 1400 km from Brisbane and 2800 km from Melbourne. Vehicles can be taken to Magnetic Island through the passenger car ferry at Ross Creek in South Townsville. The Magnetic Island Car and Passenger Ferry carries every type of vehicle from motorcycles to buses. Prior reservation is necessary before arriving on dock. The trip takes about 45 minutes and disembarks at the village of Arcadia. There are 16 car ferry services per day.

One can also hire cars, four-wheel drives and minimokes on the island. Most of the 60 km road network is in relatively good condition. However, some roads may require a four-wheel drive.

By Bus

Regular coach service (Greyhound) is available to Townsville. Within the island, the Magnetic Island Bus Service runs from Picnic Bay to Horseshoe Bay via Nelly Bay Ferry Terminal. Buses depart every 40 minutes or so.

By Rail

There are six weekly services from Brisbane and three weekly services from inland Mt Isa to Townsville. The railway station is linked to the ferry terminal by taxis (a ten minute ride costing about AU$ 11).
By Sunferries

Once you have reached the ferry terminal, the hard part is over! Magnetic Island is a short leisurely trip across the Cleveland Bay (about 25 minutes ride). Regular fast catamaran ferry trips (about 19 per day) link Townsville to the island. They are an affordable and convenient way to reach the island. The ferry disembarks at Nelly Bay where buses, taxis and car rental facilities are available.
