Magnetic Island Attractions

As a first time visitor, one cannot be but amazed at the sheer number of things to do and see. Magnetic Island has attractions to suit everybody, the young and old, the male and female. Honeymooners are blessed with blissful tranquility and natural beauty. Adventure-seekers can find countless water sports activities. Nature lovers can only relish at the natural wonders such as the Great Reef and the natural parks of the island. Some of the island’s peculiarities are listed below:

Giant Salt water Croc

The island’s unique Giant (nearly 4 meter long) saltwater crocodile lives next to the bar in the Picnic Bay Hotel. Locals call it Rin Tin Tin, and he is a huge tourist attraction.

Sea Kayaks

Kayaking is an excellent way to explore the island’s wonderful coastline as well as the numerous marine parks. Trained and accredited tour guides will help visitors have a great kayak experience.

Bush and Beach Rides

Once of the most exciting experiences of the island is to explore the island on horseback. Take your horse into the interior of the island as well as swimming into the sea. It is awesome to get the horses into the crystal clear waters and swim with them. Professional tours are organized at Horseshoe Bay.

Golf

For those who love a more quiet setting, golf at the Magnetic Island Country Club in Picnic Bay is an enchanting idea. The golf course at the Club offers the opportunity to walk through the wonderful countryside with native flora and fauna and extraordinarily scenic views.

Bushwalks

The Island presents to nature-lovers nearly 25 km of walking track through the hills of the National Park. This is an exceptional opportunity to feel the wildlife in its natural habitat. The Forts Walk is one of the most spectacular routes of the island. It is just 4 km and can be covered in less than an hour. Different trails have differing levels of difficulty. Some trails can be covered within the hour while other can take as much as 5 hours to complete. Balding Bay, Hawkings Point, Florence Bay and Arthur Bay are some of the natural attractions of the island that one can trek to. Professional tours will guide the visitor and enable him to find the Koalas, wallabies and rainbow lorikeets. For more experienced walkers, walking trail information signs are available all over the island.

The Reef

The Great Barrier Reef is certainly the most popular activity of the island. Scuba diving on the reef is the big thing. The myriad of multi-colored fish and marine life is a sight to behold. Dive courses can be organized for the newbie. The dive at SS Yongala Wreck is counted as one of the top ten wreck dives in the world. Diving and snorkeling gear are available on hire from clubs.

Sailing Cruises

Sailing is another wonderful way to explore the island as well as the pristinely beautiful ocean that surrounds Magnetic Island. Cruise organizers are available throughout the island.
